What a day in the great Northwest! Clayman and I hit the South at 11ish, the tide was flowin in and there was some thick fog. We headed out to towards the tip and started workin texas rigs. Mine was a 1/2oz mojo, red glass bead, 4/0 worm hook and a Senko, green with a chartreuse tail. We were workin and workin and workin back down and I picked up a short Cab, maybe 12". Not too long after me, Clayman picked up a Cab that was very questionable on size. It looked right on 15" to me, I think Clayman thought so too, but it was let go in hopes of a bigger. I think Clayman picked up somethin else too, but I can't remember. I told him that I was gunna shoot down to marker 34 and go from there. I can't remember when the fog burned off, but it got clear and warm. I got to around marker 40 before I had to start casting again. Right under a big rock in front of me I picked up another little Cab right around 12" again. Tossed it back and the very next cast to the same rock I picked up a 12" Grass that I kept. This was the start of the MADNESS! It seemed like every cast had a hit and every couple picked up a fish. It was awesome and just kept gettin better. Between markers 29 and 28 I got slammed and it was fightin so hard and nonstop I thought it must be a big Cab. I brought it up once and saw it was a Ling. I was stoked and got very focused cause I thought it was a lot bigger. I brought it up again and it started to tire out. I landed it and had a 28", 8+lb Lingcod. That was the best fish of the day but it didn't stop there. I kept workin down and kept gettin fish. 4 Black Rockfish, all were questionable keepers but let go. 4 Copper Rockfish, again all were questionable keepers but let go, 4 Cabs from 10-12", these 3 big Greenlings that were all released They were good sized Greenies around 14" by my guess. 2 Lincod, a 28" and a shorty I estimated at 20" A misc. Rocky that was my first. I thought it was a Black and Yellow but the yellow was not really yellow, almost brown. It's a cute little picture of it poopin, isn't it? and 2 Grass Here is what I was fishin in It is quite intimidating bringin your lure through this stuff. A lot of the Rockies were gettin tangled up in it, but I didn't lose any cause of it. I thought I was gunna lose that second 20" Ling. It was tied up in there real good. The way I got them out was goin for the break. I point my rod straight at them and start to pull. A very slow, consistent pull got them out. Doin this, you either break your line or get the fish. With 50# braid I have pulled bullkelp off the rocks, roots and all. All these fish put up awesome fights for their size. I have never felt a Copper fight much after the hit, but these were makin me think I had a really good fish on. The Blacks too, they were really impressin me. I have a theory about shallow water, not just from yestarday. It seems to be consistent, to me anyway, that fish fight harder in shallow water.
I picked up quite a few fish on my back up rod too. My main rod was my 7'9" Heavy that I was throwin the Senkos on. My back up was my 5'6" Med Heavy that was rigged with a 3/4oz mojo, red glass bead 4/0 with a BPS Offshore angler, Cajun Crab.
Clayman had an awesome day too and I can't wait to read his report.
