Got a 'Let's fish!' call from Clayman sayin he was headin out to the South and asked if I wanted to go. I had some stuff to do and told him I could get a ride a little later. I arrived at the Jetti between 3 and 4. It was a beautiful but the swells were around 9 ft. I had stopped at marker 43 to cast for 3 untouched casts before I met him out at marker 64. It was funny cause we were both using the exact same lure, a 5" Offshore Angler soft jerk, green with a chartreuse tail. He had a fat 18", 3 lb 11 oz Grass Rocky. Beautiful fish with a big, fat head and a huge mouth. My first cast next to him recieved a good hit that pulled hard for a second before throwing my hook. I didn't get touched for a while after that. I put on a 6" Senko hoping that a bigger lure would draw them out into the swells, but no. We worked all the way down to the dwindleing Bull Kelp where I got another small peck. He said he had been gettin a lot of small hits but neither of us stuck anything after I got there. We split at a little after 7 I think.
It was definitely a slow day for the jetty. That one grassie was my only fish for nearly 5 hours of effort. With the dwindling kelp forests in the shallow water I'm wanting to concentrate more effort in fishing the deep stuff, but the only way to do that is to hope and pray for some calmer seas. Those 7-10 foot swells are scary man.
