On the Rocks - 9_22_07

The weather today in SoCal today was/is not pleasant, its raining pit bulls. I have been fighting boredom and decided to hit the coast this morning, figuring traffic would be light.

I went to an un-named spot north of Malibu that has a rocky shoreline and requires some climbing to get to. I decided to try fishing tight to the rocks as Sebastes often does. I brought no bait, just an assortment of plastics and some "Calico ****tail" scent.

I climbed down the rocks in the pouring rain and proceeded to drop into as many holes as I could reach. The first few spots yielded nothing, so I kept moving along. After an hour or so I found a ledge I could stand on easily and fan cast a bit.

Using a senko type worm rigged weedless on a jig hook, a 1/2 oz bullet sinker, with a few beads in line, I proceeded to drop/cast it into spots I would normally aim wide of. After a few minutes and casts , playing with different actions I got hit by a 18" rock fish. About a 1/2 hr later I picked up a 14" unit.

Pretty cool stuff..I wonder how this place would be if conditions where better?, After bagging the two fish I decided to make the 1 hr drive home, after the 1 and 1/2 climb out of the place .

Thanks Sebastes, for the tips on near shore rockies, they worked for me. I'm cooking them up now ala Frozendog style, albeit with out the couscous(all out, had to use rice instead), but with raisins, apricots and dates.

Sorry no pics, I wanted to go light today, due to the rain and the climbing.

Excellent sport for those who like the more robust piscatorial indulgences.

Awesome!

Nice goin with the foul conditions! I can pretty much guarantee, with those results, that nicer weather would produce more fish. When the water is calm and there has been clear sky with sun over head for most of the day, the fish will go for cover. Sometimes all I can do is dip cause I'm catchin so many fish that way.
Awesome! Thanks for the report.
